Welcome to Great Asby Broadband
We were set up in 2005 to secure broadband access to the Internet for households and businesses in Great Asby, and incorporated as a Community Interest Company in 2007. The conventional means of getting a broadband connection (by cable or by ADSL over a copper wire phone network) are not available in our village - so we use an alternative with two elements:
·
A fixed leased line to the village hall with a bandwidth of up to 10 Mbps
·
A community wireless network of linked nodes situated around the village to which individual households can connect using a suitable wireless device.
The network is managed using specialised software developed by a company called LocustWorld and is supported by a specialist IT company called CMS based in Dumfries. Most households get a connection with a bandwidth of around 1Mbps, although it should be noted that wireless technology generally is subject to variable performance due to changing atmospheric and other conditions.
Further details are given in our prospectus (on the Resources page): households and businesses in Great Asby are invited to become subscribers to Great Asby Broadband. Elsewhere in our web-site you will find some information about our Service, and a village calendar. The AsbyDocs page currently features Parish Council information.
NEW - AUGUST 2010!
The most recent additions to the website are the papers for the Parish Council meeting on 31st August - see the AsbyDocs page. We recently updated several documents on the Resources page: the Prospectus; the Subscriber application form; Technical guidance on connecting to and using the community wireless network; and our Terms & Conditions of Service Provision. The latter have been changed in respect of temporary registration (paras 2.3.3, 3.2.2), holiday accommodation (paras 2.3.4, 2.3.5, 3.2.3) and the management of connected computers that pose a risk to the network (paras 2.4.8, 3.3.3, 4.4.1 and section 4.3). Please familiarise yourself with these changes which were brought into effect on 14.6.10. If you have any queries about them please contact the Chairman or the Company Secretary.
